A Room Full of Leaders

Coming into Louisiana Girls State, I was so excited to meet girls from all over the state. I knew I would be surrounded by ambitious young women, but I didn’t realize how much I could learn from them in such a short time.  

As we began to give speeches for our city and parish positions and the candidates stated their many qualifications, I had a major realization. Every delegate, in some way, was a leader.  Whether she was a president, officer, captain, sister, or just an active member of a club or organization, she led in her own unique way. 

This realization completely changed my perspective on leadership. 

Many of the delegates had already made a difference in their schools and communities. Some led athletic teams. Others organized service projects for those in need and volunteered countless hours to those organizations. Some improved their schools and fought for change through student government. And some took on roles within their families, becoming a role model for younger siblings. Although everyone’s experiences were different, there was one thing we shared in common: the willingness to step up and make a positive impact. 

Before, I thought leadership was defined by titles and positions. I once thought it was the person who is always at the front of the room, giving a speech, or holding the highest offices. However, after listening to the girls around me I learned leadership can and does come in so many forms. 

Seeing all the diverse experiences and backgrounds all in one room was truly impressive. Being surrounded by so many accomplished women it really made me realize our futures are bright—that the future of Louisiana is bright. Louisiana Girls  State showed me first hand that leadership isn’t something reserved for a few. Instead, it exists in every single delegate who is willing to step forward, serve others, and inspire change. I'm truly proud to have been among the future female leaders of Louisiana.
