More than just Politics and Government

Government. Politics. Campaigns. Elections. This is what I thought Girls State was all about. I quickly learned that Girls State is more than just politics and government. It’s an experience which fosters friendships and a community.

Coming from a small town in Northwest Louisiana, community is a huge part of my hometown. As a Louisiana citizen, community is the backbone of our state. My time here at Girls State has made me realize just how important a community is. Since the first Day, each and every Girls State citizen met new people and cultivated friendships that’ll last a lifetime.

Making friends with everyone here at Girls State gave me the confidence I’ve never had. Back at home, I’ve never been the girl who’s made tons of speeches. Being at Girls State gave me the platform to do so. This entire week of Girls State has allowed me to thrive in an encouraging environment. A place that’s allowed me to speak. The girl I was before arriving at Girls State isn’t the same girl who’s currently writing this article. She’s more knowledgeable about our political systems. She knows she can meet new people and make new friends. She’s learned that she can do hard things, like giving a speech.

Louisiana Girls State told us on the first day that you get what you put in. Just days before leaving here, I can assuredly say that I’ve gotten everything I’ve put in. Time. Confidence. Commitment. I spoke before a crowd. I made new and lasting friendships. I learned about Louisiana and the U.S’s government. I memorized chants, songs, and dances.

I’ll be going back to my hometown in just a few short days. Along with me, I’ll bring all that I’ve learned from Girls State. What I’ve learned about myself and my future. And the newfound appreciation for my state and country.

Girls State will end soon. I’ll return to my town. All that Girls State has provided will be taken back with me. I’m so thankful for the opportunity to attend Girls State. I’ll forever remember my time as a citizen of the 51st state.
